Bacardí Rum Distillery
The world famous rum distillery is a quick jaunt from Old San Juan. The facilities are the largest in the world. Visitors can take a guided tour and witness the entire distillation process, from fermentation to bottling. There is a family museum and gift shop on premises. Of course, the best reason to take the tour may be the free Bacardi rum drinks offered at the end.

San Juan and Culebra
This trip allowed us enough time to take in San Juan, including Old San Juan, on a modest budget. Getting out to Culebra was definitely worth it, it's completely different from the city. You have to work travel time into a Culebra trip, so just going for the day isn't really feasible. Two nights was perfect.

Old San Juan 1 day walking tour
This trip can be done in a sort of circle around the Old city, starting with either fort and working your way to the other side. There's not much to do in San Cristobal, although the views are nice (see photo), but El Morro is worth the trek up and into the different rooms and displays. Many of the other stops are quick photo ops (such as La Rogativa, the Totem, the churches), so they don't take... (read more - PDF guide)
Old San Juan weekend stay
We packed in history and culture on the first day. The itinerary seems like a lot, but you can take the sites at your own speed. We were a little tired from all of the walking, but were able to take a late nap before headed out to dinner. Things seem to pick up later at night here anyways. Fortaleza street was hoping. There's a lot of bars and restaurants down the end closer to the Cristobal ... (read more - PDF guide)
Glitz and Glamour
We wanted to visit El Conquistador, one of the island's best resorts, but at the same time we wanted to get a better feel of the island before being sequestered away. The Ritz in Isla Verde commands a high price, but it is the most private of the large hotels in San Juan. The nightlife in San Juan is somewhat reminiscent of Miami beach, with the added bonus of casinos. Once in El Conquistador,... (read more - PDF guide)
A coastal tour
This trip takes you into some favorite local spots. Definitely not in San Juan, you'll hear a lot more Spanish. We flew into Ponce and left via Aguadilla, which requires a little bit more planning. You can fly in and out of one airport, but you would have to backtrack 2 to 3 hours, and we preferred to spend the time at the beach. This trip is done by staying at paradores, which are independen... (read more - PDF guide)
Island Adventures
Using San Juan as a base, it's still possible to pack in some exciting day excursions to take advantage of the island's nature and adventure offerings. The guest house we stayed at is located in a breathtaking corner of Old San Juan, and most importantly has a furnished kitchen. Saving on meals allowed us to splurge on activities and nightlife. This was a high energy trip day and night.
